Management team

David Watson
Managing Director

David has over 25 years’ experience within the contract analytical services industry. He has held senior management positions with leading businesses in this sector and has a track record of adding value through business growth. He is a Chartered Chemist, Member of the Royal Society of Chemistry and a Fellow of the Institute of Sales and Marketing Management.

David Wood
Head of Technical Affairs and Quality

From 1976 to 1990, David held a variety of positions in various parts of the VG Instruments group including six years in the USA providing technical support to the company there. He returned to the UK and jointly founded SAL in 1990. David was responsible for all technical and quality matters within that business including its successful applications for accreditation by UKAS and the MHRA and has recently taken on his new role for the Concept Life Sciences Group which acquired SAL in 2014.

David holds a 1st Class degree in physics with mathematics from the University of Reading and has been involved with and chaired many groups working on methods and processes in analytical chemistry in the UK.

Clifford Rodger
Operations Director

Cliff joined SAL in 2000 as Organic Section Head at the SAL Manchester facility, after completing an Environmental Chemistry degree at Wolverhampton.

Prior to SAL, Cliff worked within the UK drinking water industry heavily involved with compliance testing.

Having progressed to Laboratory Manager for SAL Manchester, Cliff is currently Operations Director for SAL’s Environmental Division, with responsibility for over 170 staff and an operational turnover of circa £10M spread across three SAL facilities (Manchester, East Kilbride and Braintree).

David Smith
Technical Director

David is Technical Director for the SAL group. He has an MSc in Analytical Chemistry, together with more than 25 years’ experience working in Environmental Analysis. He has worked the last 14 years at the various SAL locations across the UK.

His current role includes overseeing and managing all R&D within the different laboratories. He guides the implementation of new technology and efficiencies that ensure SAL is at the front of its current markets. He is also actively involved in setting up and developing new market streams.

Prior to joining SAL, David has worked for several competitor laboratories and has particular expertise in trace organic analysis, gained from working in a variety of different environments, including a public analyst laboratory and an oil and gas exploration company.

Naresh Patel
Food Business Development Director

Naresh has over 25 years of experience of working with the UK food and drink industry and has become a well-known individual amongst the major retailers and the fresh produce sector. After graduating with a First Class degree in Applied Biochemistry at the University of Salford, Naresh complete a PhD in Renal Physiology at the University of Sheffield.

In the 8 years there Naresh’s career rapidly evolved from a bench Scientist, specialising in immunochemical methods for food testing to a commercial role managing the Analytical Section in the Chemistry Department.

Naresh joined SAL in 2001 and set up a Pesticide testing facility within the business that was unique and distinguishable amongst the competition.  With the backing of an excellent technical team, SAL, emerged from being a complete outsider in the pesticide testing world to becoming the leading analytical laboratory in the UK offering a unique testing service that was timely, customer focussed and technically strong.

Andrew Timms
Environment Business Development Director

Andrew is the Environment Business Development Director for the SAL group. He has a BSc in Biomedical Science, together with more than 22 years’ experience working in the Environmental Science industry.

Duncan Campbell
Commercial Director

Duncan obtained his degree from Manchester University in Applied Chemistry BSc (hons) in 2001 and having worked for Commercial Laboratories since 1996 has gained considerable and extensive technical knowledge and expertise within the Occupational Hygiene and Environmental Sectors of the industry.

Joining Scientific Analysis Laboratories in 2003 as a Business Development Manager, Duncan was the founder member of the Air Division helping to develop methodologies and build strong customer relations.

Duncan is currently Commercial Director of the Air Division whose staff have considerable experience in providing an analytical service to Occupational Hygienists, Medics and Environmental Consultants within a wide range of Industries.

Shane Swann
Operations Director - Food Division
Shane Swann

After completing a Chemistry degree at the University of East Anglia, Shane joined SAL in 2002 working at the SAL’s Cambridge site. Shane has over 15 years experience working within the Food Industry covering analytical Chemistry for Pesticides, POPs and Nutrition plus analysis in Food Microbiology.

Having progressed to Laboratory Manager for SAL Cambridge within the Pesticides department, Shane further progressed to General Manager for SAL Cambridge. He is currently Operations Director for the Food Division, with responsibility for over 120 staff and an operational turnover of circa £10M spread across SAL’s facilities (Cambridge, Manchester and Moy).
