Introduction

The procedure described herein outlines the determination of total dissolved solids in water samples by gravimetric analysis..

Principle

Water samples of known volume are evaporated at 175°C in a pre-weighed beaker and the dry weight is recorded. The measured weight change is the total dissolved solids in the volume of sample.

Performance Characteristics

Range of Application

  • Aqueous samples 0.0001 to 50 g/l

Limit of Detection

  • Aqueous samples circa 0.1 mg

Analytical Quality Control

Analytical quality control is maintained by a number of measures:

  • Analysis of reagent/method blanks within each analytical batch

  • Participation in external proficiency testing and interlaboratory schemes such as AQUACHECK
