Introduction

The performance of this method is validated in accordance with internationally recognised procedures.

The analytical procedure described herein outlines the determination of free sulphur in soils by solvent extraction and gravimetric procedures.

Principle

An aliquot of dried and ground soil is extracted with hot toluene. The extract is reduced in volume to dryness. The residue is then weighed after attack with concentrated sulphuric acid.

Performance Characteristics

Substances Determined

Free sulphur.

Range of Application

  • Soil samples 0.5 to 100 %

Limit of Detection

  • Soil samples 0.5 %.

Analytical Quality Control

Analytical quality control is maintained by a number of measures:

  • Analysis of control samples within each analytical batch.

  • Analysis of reagent/method blanks within each analytical batch

  • Ongoing quality assured by the use of control charts in conjunction with warning and action limits for the QC sample data

  • Participation in external proficiency testing and interlaboratory schemes such as LGC CONTEST, HSE WASP, CSL FAPAS
