General Introduction

The Microbiological and Pesticide Laboratories of SAL in Cambridge

SAL has developed new, state of the art laboratories providing microbiology and nutritional testing services for the food industry. The new 1,300m2 testing facility, based in Cambridge was officially opened in April 2011 and is connected to the existing pesticide laboratory to create a dedicated food testing facility. The laboratory holds UKAS accreditation to the ISO 17025 standard for a comprehensive range of tests incorporating standard enumerations and pathogen testing.

SALs microbiology laboratory has been designed to facilitate high throughput with attention to detail, efficiency and safety. A unique feature of the new facility is the one way sample flow which eliminates cross contamination during sample processing - A design which has been commented on and commended by leading microbiologists.

Quality

There is ever increasing pressure on food manufacturers to ensure food safety and with legislation being tighter than ever, complete confidence in the testing laboratory is a fundamental necessity.

SAL work very closely with clients to identify any needs and tailor the testing package to exacting requirements. It is this close working relationship, and commitment to customer satisfaction that puts us ahead of our competitors.

Investment in staff training ensures all data is checked to the highest level before delivering to the client. SAL assures a high quality and customer focused service ensuring protocols are adjusted to suit the diverse range of products tested, taking into consideration sample type, leading to accurate measurement and reporting of final results.

Analytical services are fully supported by technical guidance and assistance with the interpretation of data ensuring total customer satisfaction.

Management of Data

To allow effective management of analytical data, SAL has modified the LIMS (Laboratory Information Management System) to enable clients to access and manage their analytical data on-line. The online LIMS system gives clients the flexibility to register samples directly prior to dispatch alleviating any transcription errors.

Online Microbiological Results Screen

The SAL online system allows clients to review results as they are produced in the laboratory. The client has full control of the testing specification and out of specification results are highlighted which attracts immediate attention for 'cause for concern' results. The search and trend analysis options enable straightforward management of results and expenditure.

With the powerful trending tool inbuilt into online LIMS, clients have the ability to trend their results very quickly. This allows a multitude of results to be viewed at a glance and for spotting any adverse trends in microbiological quality, giving the client a clear understanding of any issues being faced. The system is easy to use and is offered to clients irrespective of the numbers of samples tested.

Rapid Testing

Investment in the new Rayal ELISA system enables presumptive determination of Salmonella within 48 hours; this offers a reduction of 24 hours on traditional methods. The method used is reliable, accurate and UKAS accredited.

Sample Collection

SAL has a fleet of temperature controlled vans that can assist with the safe transfer of samples from clients (UK) to laboratory.
