Dioxin and Furan Analysis Service

Dioxin analysis

SAL offer a comprehensive dioxin and furan analysis service which is accredited by UKAS to the 17025 standard. Dioxin and Furan analyses are performed routinely on a wide variety of matricies such as water, soil, air and food. We have been offering a specialist dioxin analysis service for over 14 years and have analysed well in excess of 10000 samples.

The analytical methods are based on the USEPA Method 1613, USEPA Method 23 or European standard BS/EN 1948. SAL can also perform dioxin testing to the requirements of CARB Method 428.

The 17 specific toxic congeners are targeted individually using one of our high resolution Autospec Ultima Mass Spectrometers. The remaining less toxic dioxin and furans (which have not been targeted individually) are grouped according to the degree of chlorination and a figure is presented for the total of each group. In addition, a total is presented for the two homologous groups, namely: dioxins and furans. Finally, a grand total is provided which provides a measure of the dioxin toxicity of the sample expressed relative to the 2,3,7,8 TCDD Isomer.

The relative amounts of the targeted isomers and the group totals (refered to as a congener profile) often helps to identify the origin of dioxin contamination in a particular sample. The data are processed using our bespoke quantitation software package sally which was specifically designed to and validated to Dioxin and Furan analysis.

The standard Dioxin reports include full method statements, chain of custody documentation, QA/QC and raw data. This simplifies the auditing of the report. Results are reported in the relevant units for the sample type and may include upper and lower bound amounts (a requirement for food analyses). Toxic Equivalent amounts are reported for the 17 congeners which are chlorinated in the 2,3,7,8 positions, these are based upon the WHO or International Toxic Equivalency Factor (TEF) schemes.

Our flexible approach enables us (SAL) to provide dioxin reports which are tailored to your specific requirements.

Note: SAL can also perform analysis of the PCB's (Polychlorinated Biphenyl), also known as the WHO-12, which have been assigned Toxic Equivalency Factors relative to 2,3,7,8-TCDD (2,3,7,8 tetrachlorodibenzodioxin). These PCB's are very similar in chemical structure to dioxins. The sum of the dioxin, furan and PCB toxic equivalent amounts provides an overall measure of the toxicity of a sample.

SAL are commited to providing a rapid, accurate and cost effective dioxin analysis service. We are constantly reviewing our analytical procedures and keep abreast of the latest regulatory requirements, as part of our quality assurance for Dioxin,Furan,PCB and other trace organic analyses we participate routinely in a range of international round robin schemes.
